January Has More Divorce Filings than Any Other Month

Although T.S. Eliot wrote in The Waste Land that “April is the cruelest month,” when it comes to filing for divorce, January is the month that leads to the most heartaches.

Divorce Lawyer Source states that “More divorces are filed in January than any other month, according to court records and anecdotal evidence from divorce attorneys.”

Many reasons are given for the sharp increase in the amount of divorce filings during the month of January of each year including depression caused by seasonal affective disorder (SAD), rising tensions about  money and in-law problems as well as the desire to avoid having the children experience the family breaking up until after the holidays.

Whatever the main contributing factors,  the barren month of January has become the breaking point for the fragile silver tinsel that held the family tree together through one last holiday season.
